Resident Artist Studio Program
The Old School House Arts Centre supports artists on their creative journey.
Through the Artist in Resident program, artists receive access to a studio space during open hours, for a set period of 2 years, on a monthly fee basis. We hope that during the course of their residency, artists will create original art, provide mentorship to one another, educate the public with their open studios, and bring vibrancy to TOSH.
TOSH provides low-cost studio spaces as part of its mandate to support artists of all ages and abilities. Resident artists can use their studios anytime during operating hours, and resident artists must be present while the building is open to the public. These spaces can be shared or used individually. The primary use of the space must be creative, not commercial, although modest sales of resident-produced artwork are allowed.
Program Obligations:
Resident artists must be members of TOSH in good standing to apply and throughout their residency
Resident artists must volunteer for one front desk or gift shop shift a month
Resident artists must be present during public hours (except in the case of a working darkroom)
Group applications:
We will accept group applications for all studios as shared studio spaces. Groups will have to apply together and will be self-organizing. All studio members must comply with the regulations set forth in the resident artist policy and lease.
Individual applications:
We will be accepting individual applications for full-time studio space for all studios, individuals must be in their studios during operational hours and comply to all program requirements.

Public hours
Tuesday through Saturday 10-4 pm, Closed Mondays & Sundays
Summer Sundays 11-3 pm (staffing and volunteer availability dependent)
Studios and Rates for 2024-2025:
Studio 2- 450 sqft
Yearly: $5,725 or $477 monthly
Studio 3 – 260 sqft
Yearly: $3,350 or $280 monthly
Studio 4 – Photography Darkroom - 210 sqft
Yearly: $2,725 or $227 monthly
Studio 6 - 220 sqft
Yearly: $2,750 or $237.50 monthly
Studio 8 – 110 sqft
Yearly: $1,475 or $123 monthly
Studio 9- 160 sqft
Yearly: $2,100 or $175 monthly
Actual rental rates are based on the total area of the occupied studio or workshop, including any dedicated storage space, calculated for the year. Studio rate includes GST. The rates also include $100 yearly fee for studio maintenance such as heat, electricity and internet.
Application Procedure
Applications will be open from May 12th 2023 to September 1st 2023.
Leases for space will begin in January 2024 and will last 2 years, ending December 2025.
Who Can Apply:
We welcome artists at various points in their careers from neophytes, to hobbyists, to established artists and craftspeople who wish to discover or develop their talents.
When applying on behalf of a group, please list all group members. Groups can only apply once though an individual may be part of multiple groups.
Groups must be 50% different from one another. (For instance, you cannot form multiple groups and exchange only one member). You may apply for multiple studios.
When applying please check the box to identify if you’d like to be in the studio as an individual or group. Please note that all studio obligations would apply to individuals as well as to the group.
Studio 4, Photography Darkroom cannot be converted to another medium studio
Names will be drawn using a randomizer, and successful applicants will be contacted in October 2023. All leases are for two years and are non-cancellable. If you wish to transfer your lease to another you will need to consult the group as well as the Executive director.
All applicants must abide by Policy 005- Resident Artists and by our code of conduct. All Resident Artists must be members of The Old School House Arts Centre in good standing.
