THE MONOTYPE PRINT

“Monotypes are known to be called the “painterly print” as well as the “printer’s painting”.

As David Krut has described it, a monotype can essentially be viewed as a painting that justhappens to have gone through a press, leaving a distinct quality of mark different to ones found with more traditional painting. Some monotypes and monoprints are more complex than this, with further processes involved. These works often bring together elements of painting, drawing and printmaking.

To define it, a monotype is a single impression created from a matrix applied with paint or ink.Yielding only one print, this technique is unique in that it cannot produce an edition of multiples.”

“The beauty of monoprinting lies in its spontaneity and its allowance for combinations of printmaking, painting and drawing media.”

– Tate Modern

Artist Statement:

Working from my home studio on Gabriola Island, I use a process that integrates printmaking, painting and drawing.

Among themes of home, heritage and connection, my work is largely inspired by my love of animals, often combining them with figures in loosely composed visual stories. My multimedia works on paper explore how the intuitive experience of animals can offer genuine insights for our own understanding of the rapidly changing world we share.

I am an MFA graduate from Emily Carr University, and I have taught printmaking courses at ECUAD, Isle of the Arts, TOSH, Denmark and privately out of my home studio on Gabriola. I have exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Vancouver, on Gabriola, Vancouver Island and in several juried exhibitions in Europe.
