MOONTIDE

We are Ester Strijbos (ceramicist), Monica Nawrocki (writer), and Janny Thompson (mixed media), artists from Cortes and Vancouver Islands.  Our work is inspired by island living and by our love of the natural world: the ocean, the sky, and island forests, beaches, and gardens.  Since 2019, we’ve been creating art together about how time is experienced on islands, whether through changing seasons and weather or through ferry schedules and how long it takes to be known as a local.

MoonTide is a playful, multimedia exploration of two interconnected aspects of “island time”: the ever-changing magic of the moon and the constant rhythm of the tide.  MoonTide is more than a collection of works by three individual artists. The show celebrates the joy, surprises, and connections that arise when artists work together, sharing and combining their ideas and their creative process.  Monica’s words, including an original song she wrote for the show, form the heart of the exhibition, giving life to and directly inspiring many of Ester’s and Janny’s works.
