“The Sketchbook” studio in Qualicum Beach, B.C.

I was involved  with The Old School House from it’s beginning, helping to get the building saved, serving on the first official board and being a part of Studio 9 for 10 years.

I taught adult art for 24 years in this area, originally with Malaspina College (Parksville/Qualicum campus) and then for TOSH and privately in my home studio and the Nanoose Library. Working  from my many outdoor sketches and studies …(I have pen and watercolour pencils with me always…) I am lucky enough not to be sidelined by this current health situation. I have enough projects waiting to be done, and a separate space to paint here at home which is very convenient and the hours are my own.

My home studio “the Sketchbook” allows me to perform other tasks while waiting for paint to dry and stop me going “back in” too soon!  Having notebooks , sketches and supplies always on hand is a great comfort. I usually have one or two paintings on the go at any given time and can leave them out, not constantly packing them up.

I am taking this time to re-arrange, take stock of supplies, clear out old files , dig out unfinished work and use up materials that got put on the back burner …filed away for a rainy day!  Often different art mediums get set aside but discovering them again while giving the studio a much needed organized revamp, reveals all kinds of new ideas!  My pastels are calling for attention,- it’s been a while since they were used and I plan several projects with them.

My goals are simple!  After many (many) years of painting .. art is a way of life ..so I take it in my stride but I’m always adding to it, painting  and reflecting on how I view my world. I really appreciate Illana giving artists this chance to meditate on our artistic endeavours, and I hope all fellow artists will take this time to reflect on the good side of their talents, and that they will continue to share the joy  of living in this great country with the world around us.
