RESIDENT ARTIST STUDIOS

studio 3

ARTISTS: BRENDA BROWN, KEN MORGAN, SARAH BOILEAU, MARINA WRIGHT

Studio Three is a shared working studio at TOSH, home to resident artists Brenda Brown, Ken Morgan, Sarah Boileau and Marina Wright. Together they work across painting, printmaking and jewelry, often drawing inspiration from the landscapes, people and natural beauty of the world around them.

Visitors are welcome to stop in, meet the artists and see creativity at work.

BRENDA BROWN

Brenda Kay Brown is a Pacific Northwest coast visual artist based on Vancouver Island. She creates original 2-D works in oil, acrylic and watercolour, along with hand-pulled lino prints and monoprints, and also crafts metal jewelry in copper, silver and brass.

Brenda has spent her whole life along the northwest coast of North America, from the foothills of Washington State's Cascade Range to remote Alaska, the misty grandeur of Northern BC and sunny Vancouver Island. Her four children and their children are the joys of her life. She is also passionate about gardening, fine art, craft making, travelling with friends and family, and simply being outdoors. Brenda loves teaching art techniques and jewelry making, and she finds daily inspiration in the miracle of creation. She hopes her work helps others appreciate this big, beautiful world.

KEN MORGAN

Ken Morgan has been drawing and painting for as long as he can remember, starting with pencil sketches on brown wrapping paper and a cheap watercolour set. After art school in Calgary and a Bachelor of Education at the University of Calgary, he spent 32 years teaching, mainly art, in public schools. He and his wife later retired to Qualicum Beach, where he became a resident artist at TOSH.

A lifelong observer of people, Ken paints subjects often overlooked by society, especially women and communities in developing countries, drawn to their colourful clothing and customs. His bright colours and patterns reflect his fascination with the energy of existence, from human behaviour to the vibrating atoms that make up even a rock. As he puts it, he has only just begun.

SARAH BOILEAU

Born in 1984 and raised in the small town of Fort St. James, BC, Sarah grew up surrounded by her mom's passion for photography and many family camping trips in the mountains. Creative from an early age, she was happiest when drawing or making something.

At 18, Sarah moved to Alberta, where she spent 12 years working as a surveyor in highway construction. The work seasons were long, but winters off gave her time to develop her painting. She began working in oils in 2004 and is largely self-taught, though she has learned a great deal from other artists along the way. Her realistic style focuses on landscapes with strong, sculptural shapes.

In 2016, Sarah returned to BC to pursue a career in art. She now lives and paints full time in Nanaimo, is an exhibiting member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA), and has received many awards at juried shows.

MARINA WRIGHT

Marina paints in acrylics, drawing on places she has visited, especially those she has returned to again and again throughout her life: the beaches and forests of Vancouver Island.

With a degree in biological sciences, Marina is always eager to learn more about local ecology. Her deep appreciation for the species and natural landscapes of her home shines through in her paintings. Painting is a quiet passion for her, and the chance to keep improving and exploring new subjects is a big part of what motivates her.
