Jocelyn Waugh
Jocelyn Waugh is a versatile entertainer who has performed in Canada, and the US with several groups, playing in a variety of styles, including Jazz, Mariachi, Funk, R&B and New Music. An in-demand trumpet player on the Vancouver music scene, Jocelyn has worked on several film and commercial projects. She is a graduate of the Capilano University Jazz Studies program.
John Lee
Raised in Nanaimo BC, John Lee is one of the most respected and acclaimed young jazz musicians nation wide. After showing great interest in music at a young age, Lee developed into a virtuoso by his late teens and by the time Lee completed his high school studies he had received a remarkable amount of recognition by prominent jazz musicians in Canada and earned an impressive collection of awards, scholarships and honors from Envision Jazz Festival, MusicFest Canada and Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. Through the recommendation of Ingrid Jensen (Maria Schneider Orchestra) and Christian Fabian (Lionel Hampton Big Band), Lee applied to the prestigious Berklee College of Music and received a full tuition and housing scholarship. Lee completed his undergraduate studies in May 2016 and received a Bachelor of Music in Performance. In addition to his academic training in Boston, Lee was mentored by world-renowned jazz educators Dave Santoro, Terri Lyne Carrington, Ralph Peterson Jr., and John Clayton. As an artist, John Lee is known for his incredible proficiency as a multi-instrumentalist as well as his ability to connect audience to his music and live charisma. Lee has done an extensive amount of performing in cities located in North America including New York City (Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, SOMETHIN’ Jazz Club), Boston (Wally’s Jazz Café, The Beehive), Washington (Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, Hamilton Live), Toronto (The Rex), Vancouver (Cellar Jazz Club), and Victoria (Hermann’s Jazz Club). Lee has performed numerous times as a sideman and leader at international jazz festivals including TD Prince Edward County Jazz Festival, DC Jazz Festival and TD Victoria and Vancouver International Jazz Festival. John Lee has shared the stage with international jazz artists such as Cyrus Chestnut, Larry Fuller, George Colligan, Seamus Blake, Terell Stafford, Ingrid Jensen as well as prominent Canadian jazz artists and educators Christine Jensen, Brad Turner, Jodi Proznick and Phil Dwyer.
Phil Dwyer
On Dec. 30, 2013, Phil Dwyer was appointed as a Member of the Order Of Canada. He was cited for “his contributions to jazz as a performer, composer and producer, and for increasing access to music education in his community.” In January 2015 he was recognized by the Royal Conservatory of Music as an Honorary Fellow. These distinctions arise from an illustrious thirty year career collaborating with a storied roster of great musical artists, crossing stylistic and geographic borders. Phil has appeared on ten Juno Award-winning recordings, and over thirty nominated recordings. He is also a recipient of the prestigious K.M. Hunter Prize, for excellence in the arts.
Phil started the Phil Dwyer Academy of Music and Culinary Arts (PDAMCA) in 2005 which ran until 2014. This summer music camp became a celebrated hub for music students from Canada and US to hone their skills with the guidance of some of the best jazz musicians on the scene.
Rob Piltch and Neil Swenson
Guitaritst, Rob and Bassist, Neil are two of the most accomplished musicians in Canada and have performed with the best of the best internationally. Rob and Neil will give a short workshop to the students before their concert on Tuesday evening. PDAM Students are invited to attend the concert as part of their tuition.
Drake Shoemaker
Teaching Assistant
A 21-year-old bassist from Port Alberni, BC. Recently finishing his third year of studies in the Vancouver Island University Music Program, Drake has been lucky enough to study under the tutelage of Juno Award-winning bassist Ken Lister and has performed alongside renowned Canadian artists such as Miles Black, Bill Coon, Brent Jarvis, John Lee, Walter Martella, Hans Verhoeven, and Graham Villette.
Warp Academy – Abelton Workshops
Warp Academy is a new type of online music academy for producers and performers who have chosen to use Ableton Live.
There will be 2 x 2.5 hour workshops on Abelton software by Warp Academy.
