SEPTEMBER AT TOSH

September in an old school house has a particular feeling. It’s like the building knows what this month is for.

The smell of freshly sharpened pencils. A cooler breeze moving through the building. Everyone returning from wherever the summer took them. The afternoon light slowly turning gold.

And this September, our galleries and classrooms are very full indeed.

THREE NEW EXHIBITIONS

This month, all three TOSH galleries are home to installations — artwork that doesn’t simply hang on the walls, but inhabits the room.

Our galleries were once classrooms, and there is something particularly fitting about filling them with work you have to move through rather than simply walk past.

Christine Hood — Slipstream
Metal, ceramic, vines and found objects come together in a purposeful palette of white, black, grey and neutral tones. The work explores the tension between frailty and resilience, and what it takes to steer your own path in a current you did not choose.

Gail Protti — Bloomworks: A Garden of Fragmented Memories
A garden created from reclaimed cloth, painted canvases, textile vessels, sculptural furniture and hand-stitched cats. Gail works with thrifted and vintage textiles that arrive already carrying histories, joining them slowly and visibly so the stitches themselves become part of the work.

Arlen Pelletier — Tenderheart
Small bronzed figures of a recurring character use a material traditionally reserved for monuments to explore grief and the tides of change created by life events.

FALL CLASSES ARE IN SESSION

The TOSH classroom is back, and our fall Arts Education lineup is one of the biggest we’ve offered.

September includes Watercolour for Everyone with Kelly Ulrich, Acrylic 101 with Jolene Aarbo, 8 Week Drawing with Catherine Trembath, contemporary Chinese brush painting with Andy Lou, plein-air sketchbooking with Dorota Goede, botanical dyeing with Bonnie Lefebre and Art Cloth Foundations with Nelusha McDonald.

Every class is taught by a professional artist and capped at 12 students, so early registration is encouraged.

And September is only the beginning. October and November bring everything from pastel landscapes and typography printmaking to needle-felted holiday garlands.
